They left Archie to get used to his new surroundings about an hour later. At Danielle’s house they found Echo sitting on the floor in the living room, Emily on the other end of the room, attempting to coax him into flight with a baggie of banana chips.

Kiran laughed. “Good effort, but that’s not how it’s done.”

She crouched down and offered her hand to Echo, who climbed on and said, “Shiplap.”

Emily grinned. “We watched about four hours of Fixer Upper that Mom had recorded. He says shiplap now instead of his other new word… as long as no one reminds him of the other word.”

Danielle laughed. “Nice work!”

Kiran spent a few minutes showing them how to properly flight-train Echo—staying on his level and letting him coast short distances, mostly—and then she said goodbye and went home to take a nap.

Emily asked questions about the owl and the trip, but thankfully didn’t think to ask about the sleeping arrangements and didn’t turn out to have the mind reading powers that Danielle had worried about.

Over the next few days, Danielle saw a lot more of Kiran. She insisted on coming into WOW personally to take care of Archie, since she had no further motivation to work her butt off at the university, and they took each other up on the offer to hang out… and whatever the mood moved them to do.

More often than not, Danielle went to Kiran’s house when they wanted to spend time together. She’d told Emily that they were becoming better friends, and that she had volunteered to go to Kiran’s sister’s wedding, but Danielle hadn’t seen the need to tell her just how involved with Kiran she’d become. After all, they were just friends with benefits.

Really great benefits, as it turned out.

Even with just one fully operational hand, Kiran made Danielle feel good in ways that she’d never dreamed of. She made her come hard, repeatedly, and with an enthusiasm that never failed to make Danielle cling to her, sweaty and panting and wanting more.
